Some may argue that the PlayStation Vita lacks games. However, in light of recent additions to its library, I feel the contrary. In fact, if you enjoy JRPGs or anime-themed titles, then there’s no better time than now to get the PlayStation Vita! Courtesy of Idea Factories, Monster Monpiece has arrived to add a different flavor of genre to the mix—card battle RPGs. However, be forewarned, this game is not necessarily appropriate for kids…

CONTROLS (3.75/5)

Controls are a pretty standard affair in the world of Monster Monpiece. One noticeable mention is how during a certain mini-game session, you’ll need to turn your Vita vertically. At this point, you’ll be using the right stick to pan the screen across the various parts of the… girl’s body. Then you’ll have to essentially touch and rub on the screen on those parts and determine where the “sweet spots” are. While I must say that I felt extremely awkward with such a control scheme, at least it’s accurate.


Visually, Monster Monpiece appears to be pretty generic and ordinary with very simple 3D details in the background and basic-looking characters. The game does have a colorful schematics attached to it, but in the end it’s not going to be anything impressive. As for the audio, the sound effects are realistic, especially during the “rubbing and touching” mini-games. This could also spell annoyance and awkwardness for a certain group but perhaps enjoyment and arousal for others. Still, the music is pretty decent and memorable as you play through the levels.

GAMEPLAY (3.5/5)

Monster Monpiece is mainly about an academy that consists of all girls located in the realm of Yafanir. The surrounding town has been under the threat of demons for a very long time. As such, you have the somewhat apprehensive girls jumping in to do something about it.

As mentioned earlier, Monster Monpiece is all about engaging in battles via the card system. You have a deck that gets shuffled with the individual cards being placed on a board consisting of tiles. Here, you’ll be entering into war as you defeat your enemies and infiltrate the castle, which is executed by reaching the last row of the board.

With plenty of upgrades to impose on your characters, Monster Monpiece can be fun especially when there are lots of challenges being offered by your opponents. You will soon realize that you’ll need to carefully implement your best strategy, which can take some trial-and-error in the beginning of your gameplay experience.

And considering you have a large number of character classes, including those that heal, perform melee, and far-ranged attacks, it can be pretty tricky. You’ll be stacking cards to boost your characters and mixing auras. With bonuses that come about on the board, Monster Monpiece becomes quite addictive. And for you select few, you may enjoy that certain mini-game that involves finding that “sweet spot” on the characters.

Keeping Monster Monpiece from losing its replay value is the multiplayer mode, which is offered in both ad hoc and network. There are sets of rings to collect, with the inclusion special cards for the winner. While it’s not that entirely different from the single-player experience, this added incentive does help in giving the game a little extra spice.

OVERALL (3.5/5)

Monster Monpiece is a solid card-battle game that could potentially add some extra enjoyment for your PlayStation Vita. However, it’s not exactly the most perfect game considering its lackluster graphics and arguably annoying mini-game. My best recommendation is you try this out to ensure if you want to get a “monpiece” of the card-battle action.

  1. Playing the minigame, with the volume turned up, on a packed bus is not a good idea.
